Quote of the week:

"My advice to the younger generation: Make your mistakes now. Because by the time you're 40, you'll barely even remember them. And then you get to make the same mistakes all over again. It's really fun."

1. Dreamer – The Movie – Jonathan Goodman

My good friend Giovanni Marsico had a dream: to create a real-life superhero movie, one that would inspire millions of people like you and me to dream bigger, make our dreams come true, and change the world.

Dreamer, the movie he produced, premieres online July 20. You can sign up here to see it for free.

If you do, you’ll meet people like Lisa Nichols, a single mom on public assistance who became a bestselling author, an in-demand motivational speaker, and the founder and CEO of Motivating the Masses, a platform that reaches 80 million people worldwide.

But before she was any of those things, a teacher said to her, "You are the weakest writer I’ve ever met in my entire life." She advised Nichols to "get a desk job and never speak in public."

Then there’s Dean Kamen, whom I met at one of Giovanni’s Archangel Academy events.

Kamen is best known for inventing the Segway. For most people, that would represent a lifetime’s work. But for Kamen, who holds more than 400 patents, it’s just one of dozens of things he conjured from his galactic imagination.

For my money, the most impressive is the Slingshot. It’s a box the size of a dorm-room fridge that can purify water for up to 300 people, no matter how polluted the water is.

He partnered with Coca-Cola to distribute the Slingshot to the world’s most remote and impoverished places, where access to clean water is a matter of life and death.

And those are just two of the 20 artists, authors, and entrepreneurs you’ll meet in Dreamer.

2. Why is wearing a mask not an obvious choice? – Lou Schuler

On my first day back at the gym, after months away, I was surprised to see two guys not wearing masks.

The first was young, probably early 20s. I get it. When I was that age, I didn’t even wear a seatbelt. The second was middle-aged. I don’t get that at all.

But it was just two guys, and everyone else was masked, social distancing, and cleaning up after themselves. The workout took a little longer than it should have, and it was a little harder to catch my breath between sets. But at least I got to deadlift.

The next time was completely different. I was the only person I saw wearing a mask. Two guys monopolized the leg press for a half-hour (I kept track because I wanted to use the machine), chatting for several minutes between sets.

Without masks.

I cannot for the life of me understand why millions of Americans—people who strip down for airport security, wear shirts and shoes to restaurants, and obey laws against jaywalking and littering—have decided to take a stand against a minor inconvenience like wearing a mask.

Doctors, nurses, and therapists work all day in masks, shields, and gloves. First responders fight fires in gear that weighs as much as the average first grader. Mask-wearing criminals regularly outrun cops.

The math here is simple: If we all wear masks, we all get to do more stuff. If we refuse to wear masks, we remain mired in this pestilent purgatory.

How is the choice not obvious?

Postscript: As I was writing this—literally, while I was typing "pestilent purgatory"—I got an email from my gym saying everyone has to wear a mask. No exceptions.

The email says they’re doing it on orders from the governor, which may or may not preempt complaints from militant anti-maskers.

I just wish my fellow gymgoers didn’t need to be told.
3. How structure breeds freedom

Here’s what podcast cohosts Jonathan Goodman, Carolina Belmares, and Ren Jones talked about this week on the Online Trainer Show:

In Episode 15, How to Instantly Be More Productive Without Apps or Software, Ren describes going down a rabbit hole to find the perfect Facebook cover photo, which he accurately assesses as "the opposite of a productivity tip."

Productivity, Jon says, is what you get when you don’t stress over things you need to do. It’s what happens when you vigorously defend the time you’ve allotted for the work that matters most, work that moves your business forward, even if it’s just 30 minutes a day.

The trick is having a structure in place that allows you to use those 30 minutes as productively as possible. That structure gives you the freedom to be less focused and productive the rest of the day.

In Episode 16, How to Win by Celebrating Your Clients, Jon recalls a lesson from Joel Weldon, a brilliant marketer he met randomly on a golf course in Arizona.

If you want to sell success, call on successful people, he said. If you want to sell fitness, don’t go to people who’ve never shown an interest in being fit. Sell fitness to people who’re already fit.

On the subject of celebrating your clients, Carolina makes an important point: You don’t need to wait until you have a reason. Just make one up. You’re celebrating that client on that day because you decided to.

The more you celebrate your clients, the better they feel about themselves, and the better they and their friends feel about you.
